Unlocking a Racially Just World: Conference

The 2022 projects culminated in a hybrid convening with the theme Unlocking a Racially Just World.

The curated multidisciplinary transnational hybrid engagements across sites aim to catalyse conversations on new modes of community making for racial justice.

Keynote: Dr Suraj Yengde on Caste & Blackness

Time: 14:00 - 15:30

Description: Dr Suraj Yengde is one of India’s leading scholars and public intellectuals. Named as one of the "25 Most Influential Young Indian" by GQ magazine and the "Most influential Young Dalit" by Zee, Suraj is an author of the bestseller Caste Matters and co-editor of award-winning anthology The Radical in Ambedkar. Dr Yengde holds the positions of Senior Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School, non-resident fellow at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research and was part of the founding team of Initiative for Institutional Anti-Racism and Accountability (IARA) at Harvard University. 

This keynote conversation between Dr Suraj Yengde and Professor Adam Habib, SOAS Director, will be moderated by Dr Meera Sabaratnam, SOAS Reader in International Relations.

Far-Right Movements and Discourses in UK Universities Panel

Description: Join the project team to learn more about their findings and review the map in a participatory discussion exploring the impact of far-right ideologies in the UK Higher Education system.

Kitchen Conversations Panel

Time: 12:15 - 13:15

Description: Join the Kitchen Conversations team to hear about their process, the production of the improvised audio dramas, and their research with Black UK students exploring the relationship to the African continent and diaspora.

Moderated by Elizabeth Maina - cultural researcher, strategist and programme designer, with experience building international networks and a deep interest in the culture of black connection.

Keynote: Nicolette Naylor on Decolonising Philanthropy: Reimagining, Reframing and Rebuilding

Description: Nicolette Naylor serves as international program director for Gender, Racial, and Ethnic Justice at the Ford Foundation. She plays a key role in expanding the role of philanthropy, including local philanthropy, in global processes and facilitates partnership building between civil society, governments, private sector and philanthropic partners across global forums. Naylor has held positions at the International Centre for the Legal Protection of Human Rights, the European Court of Human Rights and Cape Town’s Women’s Legal Centre.

  • While we are happy to welcome individuals to every session of the panel, we are unable to offer a single conference ticket for both dates. To attend every session, you’ll need to book tickets for each event separately.

  • We are making all events accessible virtually as all events have been designed with a hybrid approach.

    Near the time of the event you have registered for, you will be sent joining information via our ticketing platform, Eventbrite. Please do not share this information with others, as it is unique to you.

  • The specific location for each event will be sent to you via our ticketing platform, Eventbrite, near the time of the session.

    We will arrange for signage in the SOAS buildings to direct you if you are not familiar with our campus, and you can find SOAS campus maps on our website.

    Please make sure to either have your booking confirmation on a digital device or printed out for the conference team to check to permit you entrance to the venue.

  • We are planning this conference responsibly, and will review any relevant UK Government and internal guidance in the days before the event. We will make sure to contact all registered in-person attendees with any information necessary ahead of the conference.

    We may ask you to wear masks inside SOAS buildings, and hand sanitiser will be provided at the entrance to buildings and event rooms.
